A student government is defined as a democratic, student-led organization representing students within a designated geographical jurisdiction and/or a subject of study. Examples:

Extracurricular student organization
A student organization not fitting the category of a student government is defined as a student-led organization formed around a particular extracurricular interest or purpose. Examples:
- A Model UN Club at the University of Leiden
- Student newspaper at the Universidade da AmazĂ´nia
- Young Labour (youth section of the UK Labour Party)
