What is the difference between a student government and an extracurricular organization?

Student Government

A student government is defined as a democratic, student-led organization representing students within a designated geographical jurisdiction and/or a subject of study. Examples:

  • International Association of Physics Students
  • Students’ Union at the University of Vienna
  • Zambia National Students Union

Extracurricular student organization

A student organization not fitting the category of a student government is defined as a student-led organization formed around a particular extracurricular interest or purpose. Examples:

  • A Model UN Club at the University of Leiden
  • Student newspaper at the Universidade da AmazĂ´nia
  • Young Labour (youth section of the UK Labour Party)
